Ipad Contender

Well it looks like HP is trying to take on the Ipad. This image from Engadget compares the two as they are configured right now.
The new HP Slate is going to offer a smaller screen 8.9 in. as compared to the IPad’s 9.7. I’m willing to bet the Slate will not be able to keep up with the IPad’s touch responsiveness at this point.
As far as storage the Slate looks like it is in the lead. It will hit the market with two options 32, or 64 gb options, as well as being upgradable via the SD card reader. I would like to have seen some kind of a reader on the IPad to dump images or video’s from a camera, without having to buy a dongle. I thought we were actually over the dongle day’s long ago. More after the jump.
IPad is going to kill the Slate in the connections department. 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, and the optional 3g have already owned slate.
Here is where I believe the Slate is going to fall apart. Say what you will about Apple, but the OS has been extremely stable. Slate is going after the Windows 7 crowd and I just don’t see it as a true contender with the Ipad. From all the reports that I have read so far I have not heard a single person complain about the Ipad having to reboot. Compare these results to the issues plaguing Windows 7 today, and the choice is clear.
There have been many rants and raves about Apple locking down the OS so you have to go through ITunes to get all of your software, but if you look at the stability of the Iphone OS it’s a no brainer why it’s been so rock solid.
I must admit that it would be nice to have a USB port built into the Ipad. Other than mobile me there is really no way to sync things from the Ipad to your desktop, and vise versa. When the 3g hits I’m really going to be looking forward for someone to bridge this gap and make something that will allow you to share docs, or sync your files remotely. (Other than good apps)
It’s going to be interesting to see the Slate when it hits, and I will definitely be keeping an eye on the slate, but I really don’t see it being able to keep up with the Ipad.
